Get In The Spotlight! [ReadyU’s Conquer This List]

I am absolutely terrified of public speaking. Talking in front of a crowd gives me all kinds of anxiety that makes me want to vomit. The thought of having everyone stare at me while I stumble through my words and get sweat in my eyes does not sound like my idea of a good time. This is a true fear of mine. I would rather do 100 other things than give a school presentation or sing a song at an open mic night. The knots in my stomach tighten, my voice shakes, and I race through what I’m saying just to get it all over with. To be perfectly honest, I hate attention. I do not enjoy being in the spotlight. It makes me highly uncomfortable. It makes me want to crawl into a dark corner and hope to be forgotten.

Something has got to change. I’m looking to get into the work force, and I know that once I do land a permanent job, there is a high chance that I will have to give a presentation or speak in front of my bosses. I can avoid that whole scenario until I get a job, but there was something coming up that I couldn’t avoid: my sister’s wedding.

Being the maid of honor and all, it was part of my duty to give a speech at the wedding reception—in front of 200 people. Cue the anxiety! How in the world was I supposed to gather up the courage to do this? Would I faint or throw up all over my lilac shaded dress? Well, that’s where ReadyU’s Conquer This List came in! It was time to check off #41: Get in the Spotlight! It was scary but exciting! ReadyU has everything you need to conquer beyond the classroom, and this was one of those moments where I needed to be prepared for a life skill my professors hadn’t quite taught me yet.

The first thing I needed to do was make sure that I had the basics covered. I knew that part of my anxiety of public speaking came from being afraid that I had food stuck in my teeth or a huge zit right in the middle of my face. To guarantee that this wouldn’t be an issue, I grabbed some of my all-time favorite CoverGirl® products to make sure I looked great, and used some Secret® deodorant to keep myself smelling fresh and clean. The comfort of feeling good in my own skin took away half the fear! Just like that!

After that, all I could do was just relax and breathe. By taking deep breaths and loosening up my joints, I could allow myself to speak properly and with confidence. I had my brother warn me five minutes before I was supposed to go up and speak. I took this time to take deep breaths, go over my notes, and give myself a little pep talk. I had this. I could do this. Once I had hit the first laugh and had the crowd in stiches, I already felt more at ease. The rest was history. I had overcome my feelings of nervousness and fear, and there I was: in the spotlight. Thanks to ReadyU and the Conquer This List.

Keep following along as I continue to cross items off ReadyU’s Conquer This List before the school year is over!
