What to Do When the Sadness Becomes a Little Too Much [Ask Tuffy Luv]

I’m sad. Now what?

Dear Hopeless,

Well, this is really unspecific, so I’ll do my best. But I think the basic idea of this is really important to address. So here goes:

We all get sad sometimes. It’s natural. And it’s okay. Look, we live in a culture where we’re supposed to be happy ALL THE TIME. And that’s so unnatural. Sadness motivates us. Sadness helps us become empathetic. Sadness helps us learn to become better people. Maybe you just need a change of pace. Meet some new people. Try out some new activities. Sometimes sadness is just telling you that you need to break out of your rut so that you can grow. So it’s okay to be sad. In fact, it can be really super good. BUT.

If you’re sad like depressed–if you’re sad in a way that you can’t get out of bed, can’t enjoy anything, can’t get yourself to do anything with your life–if you’re THAT kind of sad, then you MUST MUST MUST get some help. Don’t allow depression to ruin your life. Don’t wait till it gets so bad that you’ve wasted time and driven people away. If you’ve been depressed for some time, you absolutely HAVE TO go talk to someone. See a counselor on campus. Better yet, get into therapy. Do this for yourself. Because you deserve to have your life back.

Please take care of yourself. You’ll be okay. Treat yourself with respect, and give yourself the space to feel. Sad is okay; depressed is okay but must be treated. You can do this. You CAN get through this. Aunt Tuffy has your back.
