I always find that music is one of the best ways to sum up my feelings or express what I can’t. As a recent college grad, I’ve been reflecting on my college experiences quite a bit over these final days. When I see my college experience, there are certain song that really capture the moments. Here are my 10 Songs That Sum Up The College Experience. Do any of these songs make your list?
“The Motto” by Drake
How It Relates: Everyone says YOLO nowadays but college has always been the ultimate YOLO situation. It’s the only opportunity most people will have to cut loose without the responsibilities of a full-time job or family to provide for. It’s a time where mistakes are meant to happen and the punishment isn’t as severe.
“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper
How It Relates: People go to college and they want to get wild! This song embodies that carefree feeling of freshman year and college firsts.
“Campus” by Vampire Weekend
How It Relates: It’s debatable whether this song is about unrequited love or a walk of shame but either way, we’ve all been there. This song just sounds like how college should be–days spent lounging in the quad, studying romance languages, and naps in the afternoon.
“Started from the Bottom” by Drake
How It Relates: This is probably more relatable to my fellow class of ’13 grads but I feel like Drake‘s words “F*** a fake friend, where your real friends at?” ring true to finding friends in college. It takes a lot to build and maintain a solid team around you, so this a celebration of those friends you completed your four years with.
“I Love College” by Asher Roth
How It Relates: This is a song you listen to when you’re feeling like a college superstar. You can’t lose a beer pong, you’ve aced your last test, and you’re texting a hottie. Everything’s a fun time.
“Losing My Religion” by R.E.M.
How It Relates: College can and should be a time where you feel lost and question what you want, who you are, and your values. This song embodies that time of self-reflection. And it makes for a good karaoke go-to.
“Blur” by Britney Spears
How It Relates: Britney know about having a little too much fun the night before. It’s orienting to wake up the next morning and not be completely sure about what happened the night before.
“I Hate College” by Sam Adams
How It Relates: Let’s be honest, sometimes college sucks. It can be hard and make you feel like a failure. This song is a testimony to those times where you wish college was just kegs and good times with your friends.
“Good Morning” by Kanye West
How It Relates: This song is an “I need to get my ish together” anthem. You’ve partied a little too hard and made some bad decisions but you won’t let it define you. This song motivates you to do better.
“Firework” by Katy Perry
How It Relates: “Firework” doesn’t have a clear relation to college life but it’s one of those songs that became an anthem for finding yourself and being okay with who you are. The message of this song fits perfectly with the self discovery you do at school. Also, it’s one of those songs you’ll hear tons of coeds drunkenly belting at night.
