Dartmouth Throws A Blood And Crips Themed Party, LOL That Sounds Scurry

Dartmouth fraternity Alpha Delta threw a “Blood and Crips” themed party. In case you don’t know the Bloods and Crips are Los Angeles based gangs, although they can be found in just about every city. I would never, ever hold a party like this. In case you don’t remember or this wasn’t an issue where you grow up, there was a time when I was a kid that I wasn’t allowed to go around the corner because there were so many Blood gang members that it was outright dangerous. My father even witnessed a shooting on that very corner.

Gang violence is very real and dressing up as a gang member can have serious repercussions. In some schools the colors red (Bloods) and blue (Crips) are banned because it was just cause too much conflict to wear them.  Dartmouth throwing a party like this can have potentially dangerous consequences and for someone like me who grew up around this kind of thing, I’d just be too scurred to go to a party like this. Shit could get real, bb.

A Dartmouth student sent this email to the Huffington Post, “We’ve received word that two weekends ago, Tri-Delta Sorority and Alpha Delta hosted a Bloods and Crips Party at AD. Individuals mingled for hours while dressed as bloods or crips while using racialized language. It then turned into a “ghetto party” with racialized language, speech and dress. Over 200 individuals attended this event.”

Dartblog noted that this isn’t the first time this exact thing happened. In 1998 (when gang violence was at it’s peak) Alpha Deta held a similar event, “At Dartmouth College, white students at a ”ghetto party” dressed as gangsta rap artists, some sporting Afro wigs and carrying toy guns, prompted a protest…

I think these students at Dartmouth think it’s OK to do this sort of thing because they’ve never encountered gang violence (which is why they believe it’s OK to trivialize it), assume that no one is in a gang at their school and are so privileged they can’t see why throwing a “ghetto” party is rude to people who actually live in ghettos. Since the incident the university is investigating the party and after student outrage the frat has, indeed, apologized saying it was “objectively offensive.”
