A Study on ‘Beer Goggles” Won an Award This Week, and Science Just Got Even Cooler


So I’m sure you guys know how it goes, we take a couple shots and suddenly the dude who was not the cutest guy at the bar suddenly looks like Brad Pitt. Sometimes when we’re a little tipsy, people look more attractive. This may have to do with the fact that when we get drunk, we get horny.

I always wondered if it was just me who suffered from ‘beer goggles,’ but apparently, that’s not the case! It seems that beauty is not in fact in the eye of the beholder, but rather in the beer-holder. See What I did there? I’m so funny.

Anyway, someone did some research on the science behind the concept of ‘beer goggles’ and they even got a silly award for it! I enjoy a world where we can do studies like this. That is a world I enjoy being a part of.

According to Counsel and Heal, there is something called the Ig Nobel Prize, which is a hilarious science award that stands for “making people laugh and then making them think.” Ig gave their “Psychology Prize” to the researchers behind the beer-goggle study.

The experimental subjected 86 men. They were told they were participating in a taste test for a new kind of beverage. Some were told the drink was non-alcoholic. Others were given drinks with a slight bit of alcohol added to the surface and the rim, and then told that the beverage packed as much punch as five or six shots of vodka. Obviously, this was to make sure that the survey they answered wasn’t swayed by the fact that they knew they were sober/buzzed.

The researchers behind the “beer goggles” wrote a research paper with a title that sums up the findings:  “Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beer Holder: People Who Think They Are Drunk Also Think They Are Attractive.” The abstract to the paper reads, “This research examines the role of alcohol consumption on self-perceived attractiveness. Study 1…showed that the more alcoholic drinks customers consumed, the more attractive they thought they were.” So it’s true! I knew I couldn’t be the only one who stalked the guy they made out with at the bar the night before on Facebook and was horrified to see what they actually looked like in the light of day.

I find this study to be not only hilarious but useful! Thank goodness that we live in a world where people use their brains to answer the hard-hitting questions that us humans yearn to learn the answers to!
