The DOs & DON’Ts of Metallic Eyeshadow

Spring 2014 inspiration: Derek Lam & Christian Dior

Metallic eyeshadow has been making a huge comeback as of late. It’s been popping up at some of the biggest runway shows, including the latest from spring 2014. But there are definitely some DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to rocking this trend. Follow our advice, and you will shine brightly.

DO mix your medias. Cream shadow is awesome because it creates a really cool texture you can’t achieve from powder alone. But layering too much cream shadow will create a cakey effect. Instead, use a cream shadow either as the base or secondary color. Mix it with your favorite powder hue for a balanced look.

DON’T completely cover your eye area in metallics. Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE the Dior look shown in the header above. But it’s obviously not the most appropriate everyday look. Instead, pick your battles of where you want the shadow to go. For example, if you want to extend it to a cat eye, don’t apply all the way to your brow bone and underneath the eye. If you want your lids to shimmer, line your eye in a non-metallic.

DO use metallic eyeliner. This is a great way to get the look if you’ve never rocked it below. Apply your eye makeup as usual then finish with a metallic eyeliner before mascara. It will reflect light in your eyes to give you a bright awake look without theatrics.

DON’T go overboard. Metallic eyes, lips, eyebrows and cheeks are all fine and dandy on their own but should not be paired together unless for a costume party and the like. You want to look shimmery and fun, not like a lady robot who’s lost her way in the land of humans.

DO use glitter to get the look. Honestly, who doesn’t love a little glitter? This is a great way to get the metallic shadow look before buying a ton of new products to try. After applying your favorite shadow, dip a makeup brush in glitter, tap off the excess and gently sweep over your eyelid. The same goes for a liner brush if you want to add a little gold to that black cat eye. Hello world!
