How The Media Failed Women

How The Media Failed Women” is a video commentary by Miss Representation that suggests exactly what is called: the media is failing representations of women in our culture. The video begins on a positive note highlighting the many ways in which 2013 was great for women in the media. There were more women on television, more women in leadership, more women in journalism but yet something ominous was still afoot.

It’s clear from watching the video which offers little analysis, unfortunately, it appears that women are still subjected to slut-shaming, body-shaming, oversexualization and accused of being overly emotional. Ugh! These accusations and portrayals are not just perpetrated by men but by women as well. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that women are united on, at the very least the fact that we should have the same opportunities as men, the same dynamic and nuanced portrayals as them, as well as agency and autonomy over our bodies. At the end of the day we have to agree that it’s better that everyone has a choice as opposed to judging others who make choices we don’t agree with.
