Conor Oberst’s Rep Denies Rape Allegations, Calls Them Spurious And Groundless

Following rape allegations against Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, his representative, Chloe Walsh, reached out to us via email with the following statement.

“Usually we wouldn’t feel the urge to comment on spurious blog chatter but the recent allegations made about Conor Oberst by an anonymous commenter on the xoJane website are flagrant enough to demand our response. This individual’s accusations are absolutely, unequivocally false. Unfortunately, the internet allows for groundless statements like this to travel the world before the truth has any time to surface. This is a particularly serious and sickening allegation and there is no truth to it. Conor has nothing but abhorrence for the perpetrators of such crimes of sexual violence. The behavior attributed to him by this individual is in direct opposition to his principles. Conor is consulting with a libel attorney regarding this matter.

There will be no further comment at this time.”

Yesterday, an anonymous xoJane commenter left a response on an article about another woman who was sexually assaulted by a famous musician. The xoJane commenter thought she was harmlessly outing her rapist to show solidarity with other rape survivors and didn’t expect such a massive response. It’s a bit naive to think that when you accuse a notable artist of rape no one is going to notice but I can imagine that she thought a feminist forum for women would be a safe space.

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, the same right should be extended to rape survivors. If I can’t take this accuser’s word for it, then I can’t really take his, right? That’s up to a court, a trial, a judge and a jury. As of now, I don’t know what to think, I can only hope that whoever is telling the truth gets the justice they deserve.
