The 2014 Sochi Olympics are here, so why not show some good ol’ fashion patriotism for the land of the free and home of the brave by rocking some red, white, and blue? Oh, right — because that color combination looks great on a flag and hideously tacky on an outfit. Or does it?
Incorporating our nation’s flag into your wardrobe can be a little tricky, but it all comes down to proportions. You know, a dash of red here, a dash of blue there, a little bit of white, and voila! You can be Team U.S.A. without tacky exploding all over your outfit and attacking the eyes of innocent passersby. Here are six outfits that are affordable, fun, and patriotic — and you can rock them well past the Winter Olympics.
A Pop of Blue, a Pop of Red
I have some great news- colors have more than one shade. Red doesn’t have to emulate a stop light and blue doesn’t have to be neon. Try a darker shade of blue; it often looks great with whites and gold’s. As for red, we all may not be able to afford rocking red at the bottom of our heels, but we can certainly make the whole darn shoe red. This can add a pop of color to any neutral outfit and draw eyes to your sexy (well, hopefully sexy) pedicure. Check out the shopping details!
Navy blue is truly one of the most flattering of blues. Almost anyone can pull it off and it always looks so regal. You can pair almost anything with a nice-fitting, mid-length black skirt. It looks great with heels and pops of colors. For a casual day out (maybe when it gets a wee bit warmer), try on a navy blue dress with white sneakers; it’s cute, casual, and such a great combination. Check out the shopping details!
If you’re a jean fanatic like I am, a nice pair of boyfriend jeans can really give an outfit its fashionable edge. I love a pair of loose-fitting jeans with some killer heels or ballet flats. Cuff the bottom of your jeans and grab a cute clutch for a lunch out with your friends. Plus, jean blue doesn’t clash with a cute black sweater. In fact, jeans look good with just about any color.
