When asked about feminism Lana Del Rey answered, “For me, the issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept. . . Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested.” She went on to say, “I’m more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities.”
This is perhaps the funniest answer I’ve ever heard. She just doesn’t want to talk about it, guys, she is more interested in OUTER SPACE. Women are being murdered because of society’s rejection of female equality and the subject is just boring, let’s talk about satellites. When Shailene Woodley renounced feminism I argued, and will argue, that it’s an unfair question that only gets posed to women in order to foster more backlash and pit women against each other by creating a divide between”feminists” and “non-feminist” by propagating the idea that feminism is man-hating or an extremist version of equality. I believe there is some truth to journalists wanting to create a sensationalist headline but that doesn’t excuse the fact that so many famous women, who literally could not be famous without the actions of our feminist foremothers, either lack an understanding of what feminism is or are entirely ungrateful to the cause.
It’s real easy to say you aren’t a feminist when you’ve found money and success early in life but for those of us still plucking away, for the women who plan on being mothers and who may lose their jobs because they opt for maternity leave or because women with families are less likely to get promoted, for the women who are the only women in their male dominated offices, for women who need comprehensive healthcare, for the women who fear for their safety because of leering men, the subject isn’t boring to us—the subject is a part of our daily lives. Feminism isn’t just something people talk about at cocktail parties and on blogs, for many of us it’s the only thing that is going to save us.
Lana Del Rey’s stance on feminism isn’t surprising if you listen to any of her music. She literally has songs called “Lolita” and “Fucked My Way To The Top.” Most of her songs are about her surrendering to men, defining herself by who they want her to be and needing men to save her. Even her biggest fans agree that her music is problematic. As someone who has Born To Die and Paradise on repeat, I know what I am listening to isn’t empowering as much as I enjoy it. The interview even pointed out that Lana is often choked by men in her videos to which she replied,”I like a little hardcore love.”
Someone compiled all the times in her music where she refers to her love interest as “daddy.” Keep in mind she has only released one album to date. Listen below.

Some of her lyrics include:
“I gots a taste for men who’re older
It’s always been, so it’s no surprise”
“I pledge allegiance to my dad
For teaching me everything he knows”
“This is what makes us girls
We don’t stick together ’cause we put our love first
Don’t cry about him, don’t cry about him”
“We can escape to the great sunshine.
I know your wife, and she wouldn’t mind”
“My old man is a bad man but
I can’t deny the way he holds my hand
And he grabs me, he has me by my heart”
“Because I’m crazy, baby I need you to come here and save me”
