They say that when you love someone, you should let him or her be exactly who he or she wants to be. I agree with this when it comes to most things – you should keep your hobbies, sports team loyalty and friends regardless of what your significant other thinks. But if there’s one thing you’re allowed to change, its your significant other’s wardrobe.
I’m not suggesting that you turn the guy with the obsessively curled baseball cap brim into a pocket-square loving Scott Disick clone (I’ve tried this. I don’t recommend it) but minor tweaks here and there can make a huge difference.
The goal is to keep your man’s signature wardrobe aesthetic but focus on high quality items and great fit. My current squeeze was never a bad dresser, he just didn’t quite understand that a good fit can completely change the way you look. He’s started investing in a few simple items and slowly phasing out the oversized printed shirts in favor of slim-cut button-downs with subtle trim. I totally take credit.
There are a few pieces that are sort of like gateway drugs – once you introduce your guy to them, once they see how much better they look and feel in them, they’ll start to seek out other items that make themselves look and feel just as good. We are so consumed with buying people novelty gifts but when it comes right dow to it, the basics are what people really use. Invest in some of these for your guy – he won’t know how badly he needs them until you do.
