You’re Probably Paying Too Much at the Bar

Having fun isn’t a cheap fete all the time, especially if you live in a city like New York. A casual dash for drinks can cost you a chunk of change. I mean, think about it. The prelimnary costs of a new dress, shoes, accessories and the cab ride to your venue of choice is enough to send you over the edge. And the scene of the crime – the bar – is a whole ‘nother story. Happy hour is a college student/broke post grad’s dream, no doubt. Half-priced, watered-down cocktails and calorie-laden snacks for the low low? Count me in. Always. But the hours after happy hour are when things start to add up. Business Insider revealed bar owners’ most common markups for our favorite spirits…some totaling up to 400%. Crazy, right? And what’s worse is that bottom shelf liquor – ie rails, ie what most penny-pinching funshionistas opt for – along with regular bottles and drafts cost more than premium liquor. So the moral of the story is that the better you drink, the better value you get. I’ll toast to that!
