We are all up in the throes of swimsuit season now. I don’t know about you but I can’t be bothered to replace my faded, fraying suit from last season because I’m not trying to drop $100 on a small, triangular strip of fabric. What I’m more excited about than swimsuits? Coverups.
Why, you ask? Because unlike bikinis, coverups can be worn even when you’re not hitting the beach (I supposed that depends on whom you ask, but I personally do not believe in roaming in the streets with my midriff and cellulite bared. I’m a prude, it’s cool). Also good about cover-ups? They can cover up any and all problem areas. I’m partial to them because I would really like to eat a damn burger poolside and NOT worry about my food baby showing.
This year there seem to be a ton of fantastic coverup options. Which style will you opt for?
Kimono: This isn’t the first time I’ve sung the praises of kimonos but trust me – they make great coverups. This is the right option for anyone who spent a ton of cash on a suit and a ton of time on a beach body and is like ‘ugh, everyone else is covering up but I want to continue flashing my abs.’ The kimono gives a bit of coverage without hiding all your hard work. It also transitions nicely into a piece you can wear over actual clothes.
Sleepshirt: I actually got the idea for this look from my six-year-old niece, who is sort of a major fashionista. She wore an oversized top to the beach, I ended up seeing a very similar shirt in Forever 21’s pj section, the connection was made. These oversized shirts are great to wear to the pool because they’re lightweight, comfortable and not the sort of things you’ll worry about ruining.
Kaftan: My personal favorite option. Kaftans are epic this season – they’re the perfect breezy, boho item to toss over your suit, then dress up with heels and jewelry for a night out. So versatile, comfortable and just overall perfect.
Breezy dress: The breezy dress is an ideal poolside companion. It’s just so easy to toss one over your bathing suit and it’s probably the least beachy-looking choice, making it ideal for days when you go straight from the beach to lunch/dinner without stopping at home to change.
Oversized shirt: A guy’s button-down – whether it’s actually from a guy or just a boyfriend cut – makes a classic, cool topper for any suit.
Maxi skirt: Counter the midriff-showing powers of your bikini by cover your lower half with a maxi. A great option for pear-shaped girls.
Printed shorts: Wearing denim shorts over a wet bathing suit sucks (because nothing hurts like wet denim clinging to your body) but printed shorts are an easy, more comfortable option. Just opt for a looser cut with a drawstring waist.
