We’ve been seeing donuts all over. Donut DIYs, donut accessories, photos of actual vibrant frosted donuts on Instagram—tis the summer of donuts. Nevertheless, I have a confession to make: I don’t like donuts. It’s sad, even scary, I know. I don’t like donuts or beer or most pizza. Like, NYC has the best pizza in the world (supposedly) and the only pizza I like is that horrible Domino’s pizza. Year after year of elementary school pizza parties as prizes where I sat there, picking the crust off of pizzas like a tool. I am just one of those people who don’t like universally loved things like tomatoes. I can eat a whole jar of olives in one sitting though, seriously, my mom stopped buying them for years because I’d eat them all.
Donuts have always been appetizing to me. I’ll see a beautifully pink frosted donut with sprinkles and think, “Damn that looks god.” I’ll take a bite only to be disappointed. It’s kind of dry and not very rich, almost cheap tasting. Why eat a donut when I can have cake or a cookie or brownie? There are just better desserts (to me). Still, none of them are as pretty as the luxurious, decorative donut. For all you donut haters (all three of us) here’s how we can embrace the donut without that whole eating part.
