Nicki Minaj Makes An Interesting Point About Her Booty Album Cover

Nicki Minaj released her album art for “Anaconda” this week and people had some strong reactions to it. Mostly they didn’t like it, comments ranged from “she don’t love herself” to “why is she degrading herself?” If Nicki Minaj wants to show off her butt what is really the big deal? It’s 2014, it’s only a butt. How many butts do we see in a day  looking at fashion magazines or advertisements? You’d be surprised. Most of all, if a woman wants to show off her body that’s really up to her. Nicki Minaj took to Instagram to point out an interesting “pattern” she noticed.

What Nicki is suggesting is a cultural double standard for Black women. When it’s a White girl pushing out her butt it’s cute or sexy, when it’s a Black woman it’s trashy. It’s similar to how people often say Black people have “ghetto names” meanwhile plenty of White people name their kids Peaches or Bunny or whatever—some people like to give their kids silly names and that has nothing to do with race or ethnicity. Some women like to show their booties and that’s their choice, it has nothing to do with race and saying one version is trashier than the other is inconsistent at best and racial at worst.
