Joey Tribbiani is a seriously underrated Friends character. Seriously. He’s the only character who didn’t have a traditionally happy ending. He never had a big, dramatic romantic storyline, like the on/off relationship of Ross and Rachel or the sweet friendship-turned-romance of Chandler and Monica.
Outside of the show, Joey is still underrated. We separate ourselves easily into Rachels or Monicas. We hope that we’re the funny one of our friendship group, like Chandler, or the free spirit, like Phoebe (No one wants to be Ross, let’s be real). But you’ll rarely hear someone proclaim “I’m such a Joey Tribbiani” or “I’m the Joey of our friends”. And you know what, people SHOULD say that. They should say it proudly, because Joey is not the basic dumb guy that he’s made out to be. He’s easily one of the funniest Friends, he’s the most loyal of the group, and he’s genuinely sweet, kind, and caring.
Plus, he kind of represents all of us. He’s struggling, career-wise, and he’s a little out of place within his friendship group and in the world around him. He’s not what you would call ‘together’ and sometimes he makes decisions that seem ridiculous to everyone else. If those aren’t defining attributes of most real-world people, I don’t know what is.
