Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to try French press coffee (I know, some coffee lover, right?) as I interviewed the band HABES. Realizing that they play so close to my campus (CBU) and the Riverside area, I just had to inform you all about their amazing upcoming music!
Behind the folk band HABES is Jake Haber (guitarist and songwriter) and Jonathan Lewis (violinist), two young men from Southern California who have a deep passion for music and ministry.
The two first performed together last February at a benefit show for their church, Water of Life, located in Fontana, CA. Their onstage presence blended so well that they decided to mix work with ministry. They do this by being obedient to God and playing music while encouraging others with their faith.
The duo wanted their title to be distinctive and that being said they chose “HABES,” a play on Haber’s last name.
“When you hear the band name ‘The Killers’ and know their music you think of pop, fun and dance,” Haber said as he did a small dance move. “I’m hoping people hear ‘HABES’ and make their own definition of it and hoping that definition is positive.”
After writing songs and collaborating with a small recording studio, HABES released their EP “Cross the River” this past May.
HABES continues to grow by covering popular songs in local coffee shops and venues. You can check them out on Tuesdays at 7pm at Augie’s Coffee House in Riverside, CA.
HABES is now beginning to perform at N7 Creamery at Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga, CA weekly.
HABES is also working on an album and will be releasing the EP mid-fall. The band puts out their content on their YouTube page. So go subscribe and keep up with their “Journey Vlogs,” where they have been documenting their journey so far.
When I asked Lewis what inspires him to keep playing music he replied with a smile, “Inspiring others to greatness through music.” He put down his coffee mug on the table, “This is who we are, what we do and what we were created to do.”
These are two talented young men with a big heart for ministry and music! You NEED to check out their links. Especially for you Inland Empire folks, I’m talking about good music close to home.
