Sure, the coming of fall may signal the time for all basic white chicks to get their PSL on and break out the furry boots, infinity scarves, and completely unnecessary hats. But more importantly, it means the start of a promising new TV season!
This summer was exceptionally bad for any new TV, so I am very much looking forward to all the possibility that this new season will bring. Below are 10 new shows starting this fall that are actually worth a watch (and hopefully 2 or 3 or 12 watches!).
Marry Me – Premiers Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 9/8 c (NBC)
The preview made me LOL twice, which for a preview of a pilot, is seriously saying something. Marry Me follows a couple that continues to experience jinxed proposals. The two need to decide whether to continue trying, or if all of the shenanigans are a sign to let go of the relationship. While it seems the writing could be potentially… iffy to say the least, Ken Marino and Casy Wilson (real life married couple!) have enough chemistry to make this show a must see.

The Flash – Premiers Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 8/7c (CW)
Bear with me on this one, because it does seem a little weird. This Arrow (which I have yet to watch but is next on my binge list) spin off follows the life of Bary Allen who becomes The Flash after a lightening strike. But more than just an origin super hero story, it seems to combine elements of CSI, Heroes, and all the teen drama we know and love from most CW programs. As far as super hero plot lines go, it seems like this one could have enough to hook us in for more than just a few episodes.

Gotham – Premiers Monday Sept. 22 at 8/7c (Fox)
I am so hoping that Gotham will live up to its hype, because Ryan from The OC deserves a break. Ben McKenzie plays a young Gordon, the police officer who investigates the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents. This investigation brings us through the origin stories of Batman, Catwoman, the Penguin, and the Riddler—among others. I love a good villain origin story, and I’m expecting a lot from this one. Side note: super heroes are clearly the new vampires, and I’m alright with it.

Forever – Premiers Monday, Sept. 22 at 10/9c (ABC)
The pilot is already available to watch online, weeks before its release date. After my first viewing, I am not sure how in I am on Forever, but the pilot was interesting enough to bring me back for round two. Forever revolves around Henry Morgan, a New York City medical examiner who, for an unknown reason, cannot die. Henry studies the dead as a means to uncover the secret of his own immortality. While the writing was a bit flippy, and the pilot definitely tried to squeeze more in one hour than my brain could handle—it has promise. And this guy is naked a lot.

How to Get Away With Murder – Premiers Thursday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c (ABC)
Let’s be real—I will watch the first two seasons of literally anything Shonda Rhimes puts out there, and I will love it so hard. This time we get a legal thriller starring Viola Davis as a seemingly psychotic law school professor whose students seem to both fear and adore her. The real fun begins when the students become intertwined in a real life murder, which the professor must help them get away with. Get it? They have to get away with murder! As unrealistic and wonky as this sounds, I already have this DVR recording set. Keep on doing you, Shonda.
Editor’s Note: The Dude will be recapping this for us on CC, so watch along with us and get involved in the conversation!!

The Affair – Premiers Sunday Oct. 9 at 10/9c (Showtime)
Sorry to everyone who doesn’t have Showtime, because this show will surely be amazing. The drama follows two couples, two affairs, and is told from two different perspectives. The trailer (seriously, watch it) made me feel all of the feels. Not to mention, Joshua Jackson is a heavily featured supporting actor—and you simply can never have enough Joshua Jackson in your life.

Madam Secretary – Premiers Sunday Sept. 21 at 8:30/7:30c (CBS)
This trailer makes me the most excited of all. Tea Leoni plays an ex CIA agent turned teacher who has to step in as Secretary of State. Its West Wing meets Homeland meets Parenthood. The series looks intriguing, funny, interesting, and extremely well written—something a lot of these upcoming shows are lacking in.

A to Z – Premiers Thursday, Oct. 2 at 9:30/8:30c. (NBC)
Another series that has already had its online release, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. HIMYM’s Cristina Milioti and Mad Men’s Ben Feldman make a super cute, destined to be together, couple. The show chronicles their relationship from beginning to end—and the romantic in me hopes that the end could be an engagement or something because 500 Days of Summer took enough out of me with that, thank you very much.

Grace Point – Premiers Thursday Oct. 2 at 9/8c. (Fox)
I am very familiar with Broadchurch, the show on which Gracepoint is based, so I will be giving this show a shot for sure. In a picturesque seaside town, a young boy is tragically killed. This 10 episode series follows the following police investigation and nationwide media frenzy surrounding the murder.

You’re the Worst – Honorable Mention – Thursdays 10:30/9:30c (FX)
Special shout out to this FX RomCom that premiered this summer—I am including it here for good measure because everyone should be watching it, and I fear nobody is. It is simultaneously the cutest, most hilarious, and maybe even poignant, shows I have seen in a long time. Not to mention star Aya Cash is so cool in this I actually went out and dyed my hair like her.
