I remember reading The Giver and The Martian Chronicles for school and being blown away by how good the stories were and how the authors were able to write these “PG-13” novels yet still make them completely disturbing.
As far as dystopian futures go The Giver takes the cake for me. A world without color, emotion and with no memory of the past—oof. However the scariest story I have ever read in my life has to be “The Green Ribbon,” from the book In A Dark Dark Room and Other Scary Stories. It freaks me out just thinking about how freaked out I was when I first read it as a kid.
You know, the story about the girl who wears a green ribbon around her neck everyday and nobody knows why, until one day she reveals the big secret.
“And then Jenny’s head fell off . . . ” I remember gasping on the school bus home. Did you have to read any of these mega creepy books when you were growing up?
