Jane the Virgin has everything you could want in a comedy-drama about a pregnant virgin: a sassy narrator, references to Veronica Mars, grisly murders, and lots of grilled cheese. This week Jane spent some quality time with her dad and took a break from her mom.
1. When Your Daughter Asks You About Her Father
Last week on Jane the Virgin, Jane learned, contrary to what her mother had told her her entire life, she did know who Jane’s father was: telenovela star Rogelio de la Vega. Jane’s anger at her mother over her lie luckily leaves no time for her to contemplate the fact that the hottie she was swooning over as she watched her soaps is actually her dad (ew). Too pissed to even be under the same roof as her mom, Jane moves in with Michael, her loving fiancé who is totally cool with her virginity pledge, totally cool with the possibility that he might have to raise another guy’s child, and totally perfect, other than the rather large lie he’s been keeping about the potential adoptive mom of Jane’s baby. And his mysterious brother-related past.
2. When You’re Talking to the Accidentally Impregnated Mother of Your Child
Points for baby-daddy Rafael. for coming clean to Jane about his impending divorce from Petra, even when he knew that it might change her mind about giving him the baby. Jane, who’s pretty good about honesty, lets him know his single-father status might change things. Open communication is key when dealing with virgin-pregnancy.
3. When Your Fiancé Wants to Talk About Her Baby’s Prospective Mom
Armed with info almost-perfect Michael has known for months about Petra and her affair with stabbed with an icicle guy (and not the nice Grey’s Anatomy kind of stabbed with an icicle), Jane heads home to tell her future hubby all about it. Michael agrees it’s super surprising (even though it’s totally not surprising to him at all) and reminds her he’s fine with keeping the baby. So, so close to perfection if it wasn’t for the lying. Speaking of Michael’s lies (at least of omission) Michael’s wayward brother (aka Veronica Mar’s creepiest creeper, Mercer) shows up on the doorstep asking for money with the same same blackmailing vibe he had in the pilot. And, surprise, he’s dating Jane’s bestie, who finally lets Jane know they’re together.
4. When You Have Some Skeletons Your Fiancé Wasn’t Aware Of
When Jane tells Michael about his brother’s new girlfriend, he decides it’s time to come clean with her about the truth his brother is hanging over his head: in his wild, misspent youth he and his brother stole and sold car parts. When they got caught, his brother took the rap to save Michael, who already had a record, from a harsher sentence (If you’re feeling a little bit of de ja vu, this is also a major plot point from Save the Last Dance. Don’t agree to the drive by, Michael!) Jane seems a little unsettled by Michael’s bad boy confession, but ultimately grateful that he was honest with her. This would have been a great time for him to come clean about everything, but that would be too easy.
5. When You’re Talking About Domestic Violence
After Petra tries and fails to use nostalgia and a some very lacy lingerie to get Rafael to call off the divorce, her mother takes matters into her own hands and punches her daughter in the face. What at first seems like an angry outburst from a mother who’s not looking forward to giving up the nice digs provided by her son-in-law was actually a calculated act. It turns out Petra’s prenup would be null and void if Rafael beat her, which is exactly what she tells the police he did as she ices a fresh black-eye. Petra is the worst. After Jane patches things up with her dad after a series of disastrously awkward dinners, she heads to Michael’s to get ready for a sexy night together, only to discover Michael’s last lie-that he knew about Petra’s affair all along. Unable to forgive this latest lie, Jane heads home to her mom, who she at least knows will always have her back.
