January is thought of as a graveyard movies are thrown into, when studios hope people still have December Oscar-bait to see and won’t notice. But there are a few promising flicks coming out next month that might be worth abandoning your couch and Netflix to check out.
1. Cake (January 23rd)

Could this be the role that wins Jennifer Aniston her Oscar? I’m not sure, but there’s ghost Anna Kendrick, so I’m sold.
2. Song One (January 23rd)

There are some definite Once vibes in this story of a young woman who falls for a musician her currently comatose brother loved. You know, that clichéd meet cute.
3. Beloved Sisters (January 9th)

True Life: My Sister and I Share a Husband. Don’t let the German scare you off, this is a Victorian period piece with way more heat than ball room dancing.
4. Veronika Decides to Die (January 20th)

We’re all routing for Sarah Michelle Gellar to finally have a post-Buffy break-out role, and this adaptation of the Paulo Coelho novel could be it.
5. Paddington (January 16th)

Will the beloved bear be adorable and charmingly British or insanely creepy as the meme suggests? You’ll only find out if you buy a ticket.
