Zayn Malik is already opening up (probably for a good sum of money) about his split from One Direction after five years. He spoke to The Sun about his exit and revealed every fan’s worse nightmare: he’s separating from the group to pursue a solo career. He is already working on his new music with music producer Naughty Boy, who has worked with Sam Smith and said he’s even trying out rapping. He has been itching to do something new.
“I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of maybe other people’s happiness—and that was mainly the fans,” Zayn told The Sun. “And I only ever tried to do it for the fans, and it was only ever for them. And, basically, I’m only upset I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way. That’s the main thing that I don’t want to happen. It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me.”
Zayn denied former band members Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles had anything to do with the split. He said rumors that he was at odds with the boys “couldn’t be more wrong.” In fact, he explains they boys, who plan to continue making music as a four-piece, have supported his decision.
Many fans were concerned that Zayn’s fiancée, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards, pulled a Yoko Ono and was behind his decision to leave. Of course, Zayn denied rumors that he cheated and says that Perrie supported his decision to leave the group.
What do you think, Directioners? Are you going to support Zayn’s solo career?
