Jemima Kirke Of 'Girls' Opens Up About Having An Abortion

Abortion is a topic that people just avoid talking about, but stars like Jemima Kirke are teaming up with the Center for Reproductive Rights to get the conversation rolling. Jemima’s PSA joins previously released spots by Mark Ruffalo, Padma Lakshmi, and Dee Dee Bridgewater, all sharing their own personal stories about their experiences. The Girls star and mother of two talked about what it was like when she became pregnant and decided to terminate the pregnancy while she was in college. “My life was just not conductive to raising a healthy happy child,” she said. “I just didn’t feel it was fair.” [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1DhscWRT9w&w=640&h=360] Girls hasn’t been shy about talking about the controversial topic. In season 1, Jemima’s character Jessa schedules an abortion, only to avoid going to the appointment to find a random hook up in a bar and figure out that she’s not pregnant. In this past season, Adam’s girlfriend Mimi-Rose informs him that she had an abortion without telling him about it. It’s a decision that is unique to every person and every situation, but it shouldn’t be something to be ashamed of. Thanks to stars like Jemima, maybe the stigma surrounding reproductive rights will change.
