Are you sitting down? It might be in your best interest to park it because we’re about to bomb you with some news that would completely change one of the most popular television shows of all time. Ok, here goes: Monica and Chandler were never supposed to get married on Friends. I know. I know. It’s hard to swallow. The adorable couple that actually seemed to be somewhat normal was never supposed to be. In fact, Monica was meant to be paired up with Joey.
Friends co-creator Marta Kaufman explained, “[Monica and Joey] just seemed the most sexual of the characters.”
Kaufman says that the course of the relationships completely changed because of the show’s fans. Monica and Chandler was meant to be a one time fling, but it all changed when they were filming the episode “The One With Ross’s Wedding, Part 2.” Remember this?
When Monica (played by Courteney Cox) popped out from under the covers with Chandler (Matthew Perry), the live audience LOST IT. Kaufman says, “We had to stop [taping] the show because people were screaming.”
She added: “We thought it was going to be funny and we were going to get rid of it. Suddenly the audience told us they had been waiting for that and we had to rethink how we were going to keep going and change the relationship. But that wasn’t a person — it was an entire, immediate expression of joy.”
Rachel and Ross might have been the most talked about coupling, but we can’t imagine friends without Monica and Chandler together. We all owe that fateful studio audience a hug.
