If you say you met your boyfriend online, people barely blink an eye anymore. There are still the people who snicker when they hear a couple met on Tinder, but who doesn’t know someone for whom Tinder actually worked out? And if not Tinder, maybe there’s a friend of a friend on Hinge or a guy who isn’t afraid to let a woman make the first move on Bumble waiting for you.
But for those for feel above these methods, maybe The League is for them. It’s still a dating app but with a twist – not just anyone can create a profile. The exclusive dating app uses a secret algorithm to scour potential users’ LinkedIn and Facebook profiles and only allows a small percentage to join. Factors like where you went to school and what you do for a living determine whether you make the cut.
Anyone else feel like this is sorority rush for adults?
Things that will help your chances of getting a bid being accepted: being referred by current users, being recruited by founder Amanda Bradford or one of her ambassadors, and having an impressive resume.
Things that won’t get you a spot: “We try to remove duck faces, shirtless selfies, any party pic where you’re doing a keg stand,” says Bradford, who is single. “We tried to make it feel a little higher-class.”
So far, 30,000 New Yorkers applied, and only 7,000 have been accepted. But just because you’re in, doesn’t mean you’re safe. “I love kicking people out,” Bradford says. She’s already ousted one guy for calling a girl a “midget,” another for standing up a date, and another for asking a girl to perform a sexual act. “There are other apps for that,” she says.
It’s being marketed as the “country club” of dating apps, but let’s make no mistake – these people are just like us lowly Tinder swipers and Bumblers. They’d rather check their phone on the train than sit at a loud, crowded bar and they’re just looking for love/to get laid.
