I’m always on the hunt for new music, especially from female artists that make for perfect singing in the shower/car/anywhere else that won’t get me funny looks. Meghan Trainor’s album was constantly playing on repeat for a while, but I’m happy to report that Tori Kelly’s new album Unbreakable Smile has taken its place since it dropped yesterday.
You might recognize the curly haired 22-year-old singer-songwriter from YouTube, or perhaps you’ve been listening to her single “Nobody Love” since it dropped back in February. Either way, you should know about her. Artists like Ed Sheeran and LL Cool J do – both appear on her album, showing their support for the new artist who doesn’t just have a gorgeous voice, but writes incredibly music to deliver it.
Seriously, Tori Kelly lyrics are the kind that my preteen self would scribble in notebooks during math class and update my AIM profile with on the reg. Even though this album is mostly about getting over a breakup, it’s surprisingly upbeat. We can all take a note (no pun intended) from the singer.
Read on for a few favorites and to listen to her awesome songs.
“Should’ve Been Us”
“Back and forth, like a tug-of-war/What’s it all for?/Do I want it back?/I still got a little flame for ya/Even though you drove me mad.”
“I Was Made For Loving You” (feat. Ed Sheeran)
“A dangerous plan, just this time/ A stranger’s hand clutched in mine/I’ll take this chance, so call me blind/I’ve been waiting all my life.”
“If you look through a microscope at this messed-up world/You will see every scratch, every flaw, every ounce of dirt/Your so called friends you’re leaning on but all they do is take/You say it’s fine but deep inside you wish you could escape.”
“So call me boring, call me cookie-cutter/Call me what you want/And matter fact, just say it loud and don’t st-stutter/’Cause I know who I am/Yeah, I’m still the same/Just a California girl with big dream.”
“I don’t really know my fate/I just know I’m on my way.”
“California Lovers” (feat. LL Cool J)
“I’ll be cool with it, done with it/You’re never on my mind/Till I feel the heat of you and me/It hits me every summer/Remember when no one else could make me feel alive?”
“Where I Belong”
“I’m just a girl and her guitar/Trying to give you my whole heart.”
