Breakups are never a good time. Whether it’s the first time you’ve ever been dumped or the fifth, putting an end to a relationship is certainly not a walk in the park. Especially when it comes to your first love. If I’m giving you a flashback to you crying in your dorm room in 2011 listening to Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You” on repeat, I apologize.
Movies make us believe in that fairytale ending where your knight in shining armor rescues you from loneliness, when in reality, that knight in shining armor is the pizza delivery man and you’re still stuck on the couch snuggling next to yourself. I’m not saying you should wallow in your sorrows forever, but here are the reasons why you can’t get over your first love. Until you see past these things, you’ll never be able to move on to someone new. (Who, let’s be honest, will be better for you anyway).
1. It was your first love.
There’s a theory that if you fell in love during adolescence, like I did when I was 16, you’ll have formed a biological bond with that person that’s impossible to break. Great.
2. You continue to see each other/ talk to each other.
This is probably self-explanatory, but I’ll explain anyway. If you act like nothing ever happened, you’re only hurting yourself by hindering your ability to move on and open yourself up to someone new. Period.
3. Sex. Lots of great sex.
Sure it was good, but you’re young and hot. There are plenty of other penises to go around.
4. You remember only the best times.
Remember that time he was a jerk? And that other time? No? Well you should. Because those moments definitely happened.
5. You want what you can’t have.
No matter what the cause of your breakup, things ended for a reason. It’s natural for humans to feel this way.
6. You miss the idea, not the person.
Sure, you knew that person when you were in high school, but you’re two completely different people now.
Now get out there and conquer the world. Or men, at least. Because at the end of the day, someone fell in love with you because you’re awesome. And someone will fall in love with you again.
