For most people, coffee is a very crucial part of their morning. For me, I literally cannot function throughout the day without a large cup of iced coffee. Seriously, it’s a problem. But have all you caffeine addicts out there considered incorporating cat poop into your daily morning routine?

Cat poop coffee, or Kopi Lupwak, is known as both the rarest, most expensive coffee in the world. It might cost someone $80 a cup, which is pretty steep for a cup of joe. The coffee berries are basically eaten and pooped out by an Asian Palm Civet, then they get processed. According to this site, people have theorized that “the coffee berries are a better coffee product because if the cats chose to eat the coffee berries, the cats must be choosing the best coffee berry possible.”
Yeah, I know. When you think about literal cat poop coffee, the first thing that pops into your head is “Eww!” Don’t get me wrong, when I first heard about the coffee, I was seriously ready to puke and I was so hesitant to even put my mouth anywhere near a cup of the stuff. In fact, no one else in the office was daring enough to try it. I tried a free cup, and it’s actually not that bad. Really! I’m not kidding. To me, it’s just really strong. I thought it was kind of similar to the Cafe Bustelo coffee I usually drink.
I got some feedback from other native New Yorkers about their thoughts on the coffee’s taste and believe it or not, everyone gave positive reviews of it. Lassana, 18, said, “It’s actually not that bad. I’m usually used to the espressos from Starbucks and it tastes like that, anyhow.” Joseph, 24, said, “I like it. I like it better than Starbucks, let me just put it that way!”

If you think you’re daring enough to try out this weird coffee and you’re currently in the New York City area, The Economist is giving it away for free now on the corner of West 41st and 6th Avenue as a promotion for their subscription service. They’re doing as a way of saying if you’re brave enough to try the coffee, then you’re brave enough to subscribe to their magazine on the street (which seems super weird, to me, but, whatever). The subscription is your call, but as for the coffee, why not give it a shot? It would be pretty cool to cross this one off your bucket list!
