Two people were injured yesterday and hundreds more were evacuated from the well-known Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas after a cabana fire engulfed the pool area in flames.

Around 12:15pm (3:15pm EST), more than 100 firefighters were called to the scene as black smoke filled the air on the 14th floor pool deck at the Cosmopolitan’s Bamboo Pool at the West End Tower.

NBC is reporting: “The fire torched trees and cabanas at the Bamboo Pool on the west side of the hotel, but made little impact inside the building…” As of last night, “all areas except [the] Bamboo Pool, Sahra Spa, West End Fitness Center and floors 14 & 15 of the West End Tower” were accessible again, as stated on The Cosmopolitan’s Twitter page.

The fire was put out within 30 minutes of emergency vehicles arriving, leaving no one seriously injured and very minimal damage inside the building. Two people were treated for smoke inhalation and a few windows were broken during the mishap, along with some rooms “sustaining water damage from sprinklers,” according to The Las Vegas Sun.

Hotel guests staying on the 14th and 15th floor were relocated to other parts of the hotel or nearby resorts. In addition, during the time of evacuation, road closures backed up Las Vegas Boulevard South from Tropicana Avenue to Flamingo Road for about an hour.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it seems a cigarette caused all the damage. “The cause is unknown, according to the Clark County Fire Department; a witness told the Sun that employees think it was started by a cigarette tossed from one of the hotel’s top floors, or possibly discarded into a bush on the pool deck.”

“We can confirm that the fire at Bamboo Pool has been put out with no serious injuries. Guest and CoStar safety is our first priority,” The Cosmopolitan reassured their guests via a Twitter statement.

The Cosmopolitan Hotel opened in 2010 and has just under 3,000 rooms. This year, the posh hotel landed on Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List of World’s Best Hotels, which is frequented by big name celebs like Beyoncé, Rihanna and Blake Lively, alongside the Bellagio, Wynn and Encore Wynn.
