This coming August will be 57 years since the murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Chicagoan boy who went to visit family in Money, Mississippi. Jay Z and Will Smith are a the few producers who are teaming up to produce a mini-series on HBO about the events that lead up to his tragic death as well as the events that happened after.
In 1955, Till was accused for whistling at Carolyn Bryant, the wife of Roy Bryant, owner of Bryant’s Grocery store where the incident took place. The night of August 28, Bryant and his half brother J.W. Milam, kidnapped and murdered Till then threw his body down the Tallahatchie River. Mamie Till Bradley, the mother of Emmett Till, insisted on having a open casket funeral so the world could see what was done to her son. Milan and Bryant were tried and acquitted in September of 1955, but they both admitted to killing Till after the trial was done.
The murder of Emmett Till is noted as a pivotal event motivating the African American Civil Rights Movement. Till would have turned 74 on July 25.
