Macklemore's Fame Caused Him To Turn Back To Drugs

Back in 2013, Macklemore was on top of the world. He and producer Ryan Lewis were turning out hit song after hit song and having us all hit local thrift shops and celebrating “Same Love.” But shooting to the top isn’t without stress. The Seattle rapper battled with drugs before and has recently come out to Complex about his relapse with sleeping pills and marijuana following his mega-success.

I held it together for a while. But, eventually, I stopped going to my 12-step meetings. I was burnt out. I was super-stressed. We weren’t sleeping – doing a show every day, zigzagging all over the country. In terms of the media, I was getting put into a box that I never saw myself. The pressure and the fame – everything. All the clichés, man, like not being able to walk around, having no privacy, and from this TV appearance to this TV appearance, and the criticism, and the lack of connection, and the lack of meetings – all of that put into one pie was just…I just wanted to escape.

Macklemore says he sobered up last year when his fiancee Tricia Davis caught him hiding sleeping pills in his shoes, but it didn’t stop him from smoking. “I sat in a car, a hot boxed car and got high.”
But Macklemore is back on track. Macklemore is sober and expecting a baby with his fiancee.

Since I heard that Tricia was pregnant, I was like, ‘I need to grow up right now.’

He’s also finishing a second album with his partner in crime, Ryan Lewis. The record should be out later this year, so you can look forward to more Macklemore on your radio soon.
