Recently at a panel from the summer Television Critics Association press tour, Ryan Murphy, the creator of the new Fox television series, Scream Queens, revealed that Chanel, Emma Roberts’ character on the show, was inspired by University of Maryland’s very own Delta Gamma sorority sister, Rebecca Martinson. Rebecca Martinson, the “deranged sorority girl,” became infamous on the Internet when her email to the Delta Gamma executive board was leaked to the rest of the sorority and, in turn, the rest of the Internet. Laden with expletives and caps-lock galore, you can see why this email proved to be perfect inspiration for Emma Roberts’ character who rules her sorority with an iron fist.
However, unlike Rebecca Martinson, Chanel has an awareness about her character and even a few redeeming qualities (Martinson apologized and resigned). Television shows always get complicated when you add human qualities to a character you’re supposed to hate.
Murphy revealed that Scream Queens was, in some form, a spinoff of American Horror Story: Coven.
Scream Queens’ pilot will be aired on September 22, 2015 on Fox.
