Miley Cyrus On Sexism & A Money-Obsessed Music Industry

Miley Cyrus is on the cover of Marie Claire‘s September issue– and got very candid and honest in the interview, on every topic from the sexism in the music industry and Taylor Swift, to her new organization the Happy Hippie Foundation.
She says, which I’m sure most people would be quick to agree with, that the industry is too focused on money and indicates that fellow-stars get a little too greedy the more famous they become.
“People in this industry think, I just gotta keep getting more money, and I’m like, ‘What are you getting more money for?’ You probably couldn’t even spend it all in this lifetime.’ People get more famous, so that they can make their brand more famous, so that they can sell more shit, so that they can make more money. It’s a never-ending cycle.”
She doesn’t think happiness leads to money, and feels she is in the position to confirm this because “[She’s] experienced it all already, and [is] telling you first hand, it doesn’t.”
In the past few years, especially since her wild and epic performance with Robin Thicke (you know the one), she has gotten a lot of backlash for the way she has chosen to display herself– which, just to be clear, has often been in minimal clothing completely naked. Take, for example, her Wrecking Ball video, where she is completely naked, swinging back and forth on a wrecking ball, and licking a sledgehammer.
Cyrus wants to know why nude and sexual-in-nature videos and performances are frowned upon, yet more violent ones are praised– specifically calling out Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood music video, which is rumored to be a shot taken “rival” at Katy Perry.
“That’s supposed to be a good example?” Cyrus said. “And I’m a bad role model because I’m running around with my titties out? I’m not sure how titties are worse than guns.”
Another thing that seems to baffle the 22-year-old singer is the unfair sexism obviously present in the industry.
“There is so much sexism, ageism, you name it. Kendrick Lamar sings about LSD and he’s cool. I do it and I’m a druggie whore.”
Hmmm. Interesting point.
Cyrus, set to host the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards, has been busy with the organization she recently created and launched, the Happy Hippie Foundation, which “fund[s] programs that support homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations.”
“A lot of us are born into some shit, you know what I mean?” said Cyrus. “Lately, I’ve been talking a lot about my being gender-fluid and gender-neutral. And some people snarl at that. They want to judge me… People need more conventional role models, I guess. But I just don’t care to be that person.”
You can buy the magazine and read the full interview when it hit stands on August 18th.
