Ladies (and gentlemen), there is a new Presidential candidate in the running that is causing a stir. And, no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump.
I’m talking about Deez Nuts. Yes, you read that correctly. Deez Nuts is a registered independent. He is a supporter of a balanced budget and the Iran nuclear deal. Earlier this week he was surging in North Carolina polls at 9%, and has quickly become the most successful independent in over two decades.
Oh, and did I mention that he is a 15-year-old, Iowa farm boy?
His real name is Brady Olson, son of Mark and Teresa Olson, and he begins his sophomore year of high school next week.
In matchups with Trump and Clinton, Deez Nuts received 8% favoring in Minnesota, 7% in Iowa, and in a survey released on August 19 by Public Policy Polling (PPP), he had a “favorable” rating of 6%.
If you’re confused, trust me, you’re not the only one. Let’s clarify: Obviously, he is way too young to be president. He misses the minimum age requirement by about 20 years.
How did this even happen then, and why are people voting for him?
According to the Daily Beast, Olson got the idea to run after hearing about the Limberbutt McCubbins story, “referring to a 17-year-old high school student from Louisville who filed a statement of candidacy for his friend’s cat ‘Limberbutt McCubbins.'”
Olson/Deez Nuts told Rolling Stone that people should vote for him because “I’m young and I think I have fresher ideas because whatever decisions I make would have longer effects on me.” He also said, when asked why he entered the presidential race, “To clear the way for a future third-party movement.’’
Aside from being completely hilarious, the fact that he could even register shows a huge problem with our polling system.
As Olson/Deez Nuts himself pointed out, “The fact that if I can fill out a form so vague that it doesn’t include your age, or the fact that all get accepted even if they’re only partially filled, anyone can run.”
God bless America.
