The MTV VMAs are known for their shocking moments, and last night was full of them (see: Miley Cyrus‘ wardrobe malfunction, Justin Bieber breaking down in tears onstage…) Perhaps the night’s biggest “OMG” moment was when Nicki Minaj called out Miley Cyrus for talking sh*t about her in the press.
Let’s back track. It all started when Miley talked to a New York Times reporter earlier this week and was ask how she felt about how Minaj handled herself during the Twitter war that erupted between Minaj and Taylor Swift. Miley added her two cents stating,
What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war.
Minaj didn’t comment on the interview after it came out, which had us thinking she decided to take the higher road and ignore the comment, but while receiving the Best Hip Hop Video award, this happened.
Please note Rebel Wilson in the background, who was all of us in this moment.
Umm…awkward. The best part is Miley’s reaction, which wasn’t shown on television but thankfully someone was able to record it.
Was this one of the great moments of live TV? The debate is on as to whether the whole incident was staged or not.

Looking back, Miley was pretty quick with that response and Nicki was milking it.
Mashable’s Brian Hernandez claims an MTV rep told him it was not staged, and a report from Us Weekly says Nicki was “livid” about Miley’s comments and “the anger was very real.”
That Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus onstage verbal spat WAS NOT STAGED, an MTV rep just assured me, for what it's worth. #VMAs

Fake or not, Nicki and Miley did get us talking. Point to them.
