15 Things to Know About People Who Enjoy Reading

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who enjoy reading and those who don’t. If you are dating or friends with a bookworm, it’s important to know that they view things a little differently than the rest of the world.
They enjoy spending time alone. Someone who reads often doesn’t feel the need to always have other people around. In fact, sometimes we prefer when they’re not. Sometimes a good book is the only company we need.
Characters sometimes feel like real people. When we get really invested in a story, we start to feel like the characters in the book are real people, and may get so emotionally invested in it that we even talk about them like they’re real too.
Saying you “don’t have the time” to read is insulting to us. By saying that you believe you are too busy to read, it insinuates that you think we have nothing better to do, as if reading is only a hobby picked up by people who don’t have enough in their lives to keep them busy and need to resort to a novel for entertainment.
Reading does not make us geeky. Sure, we might be nerds at heart. But reading isn’t only something you do if you are a “loser.”
Reading is form of meditation for us. It drowns out the noise from the rest of the world. Getting lost in a good story allows us to let everything fade into the background, and centers us to only think about the words before us.
If you think reading is boring, you’re doing it wrong. If the only experience you have with reading has been your mandatory school texts, then it’s understandable why you despise it so much. If you don’t enjoy reading, it just means you haven’t been reading the right type of books.
Yes, the book is always better than the movie. And no, us saying that is not a way to brag, it is just a fact.
Reading a real, paperback or hardcover book is an entirely different experience than reading on a tablet or Kindle. Without being able to physically hold the book in your hand, and flip through the pages, and smell the old paper, takes away from it.
Nothing is sexier to us than a guy who enjoys reading.
We’re empathetic by nature. When you spend so much time reading the stories of other people’s’ lives, it has a way of making you feel like you’ve experienced more in life than you actually have. Because of this, because we have taken such frequent dives into the depths of other people’s’ minds, we tend to be more understanding and sympathetic to other people, the thoughts and emotions they have, even if they are entirely different from the ones we have ourselves.
We make great listeners. We care about the details of people’s’ stories. We listen closely, because we like absorbing the experiences of other people.
If you ever need to give us a gift, know there are few things we will appreciate more than a good ‘ol gift card to Barnes and Nobles.
Parting with certain books will sometimes be physically painful. Don’t blame us if we’re unable to. You don’t have to understand it.
We tend to categorize certain phases of our life into chapters. We look at our lives as a story, and know that when one phase is over, it is like ending one chapter a beginning a new one.
