Dining hall food is fun for about a week freshman year. After that, the endless buffet of reheated junk loses its appeal. But between classes, studying, clubs, and other activities, who has time to eat anything other than a slice of pizza on the go? Besides that, you probably don’t have a ton of money to be spending on dorm room cooking. Check out these eight easy options that you only need a microwave to cook and will only take you five minutes to make.

1. Pizza bagels

All you need is a microwave to make this childhood favorite. Cut a bagel in half, spread a little sauce, sprinkle some cheese, and add whatever other toppings you deem appropriate. Pop your creations in the microwave for about a minute, until the cheese gets nice and melty.

2. Nutella bites

Who doesn’t have a food-crush on Nutella? It’s not the healthiest snack, but mix it with oats, coconut, chia seeds, and honey, roll the concoction into balls, and you’ve got the perfect portable energy boost. Bring a few with you for breakfast or to snack on between classes.

3. Pad Thai (Broke college student edition)

Adding that peanut butter to every college student’s go-to meal, Ramen noodles, as well as some Sriracha makes for a perfect late-night snack. Simply crush the ramen in bowl, add water, stir in the seasoning packet like usual. Then pop it in the microwave for 4 minutes, add the peanut butter and chili sauce, and mix well.

4. Crackers with peanut butter

Peanut butter should always be on your care package wish list. It’s a great, filling energy boost that goes with practically anything…or you can take a spoon straight to the jar. Spread some peanut butter on crackers when it’s too cold or rainy to trek to the dining hall.

5. Mac & cheese in a mug

That coffee mug can serve multiple purposes besides holding coffee and making the perfect selfie accessory. Think pencil holder, bug catcher, and even bowl for this easy mac and cheese recipe (just not at the same time). Combine the pasta and water in the mug and microwave on high for two minutes. Take it out and stir, then repeat until the water absorbs completely and the pasta is cooked. Then add milk and cheese. Another minute in the microwave, a good stir, and it’s ready to eat.

6. Mini layered Mexican dip

Chips and dip are always the perfect snack. All you have to do is layer refried beans, salsa, and shredded cheese in a bowl. Heat in microwave and top with non-fat Greek yogurt and guacamole. Break out some celery sticks or tortilla chips and you’re ready for movie night!

7. Turkey & cheese bites

Put a spin on this classic sandwich with this hack! Top whole grain crackers with deli-sliced turkey and your favorite cheese. Warm your creation up in the microwave and top with salsa for a nice kick.

8. Protein bars

There are going to be some days where you don’t even have time for a snack that takes five minutes to prepare. Keep protein bars on hand for when you need a grab-and-go meal.
