Sam Smith Releases Official Theme Song For James Bond Film, 'Spectre'

Today, Sam Smith has released the long-awaited theme song for the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre. The track, “Writing’s on the Wall” has a retro-sound and features string orchestrations and, of course, the R&B musician’s incredible crooning and soulful voice. However, it’s a gentle piece, meaning that it lacks the tension and excitement that most James Bond theme songs tend to evoke.
In short, I’m bored.
The song was co-written by both Smith and “Stay With Me” collaborator, Jimmy Napes. Understandably, it received mixed reviews. For example, the Telegraph claims that the song features “the best vocal[s] that [Smith has] ever recorded” whereas The Guardian calls the track an “X Factor ballad” that “only took 20 minutes to write.”
I happen to agree with the Telegraph. I think that Smith really demonstrated a vocal skill in “Writing’s on the Wall” that his other tracks have not seen. However, it doesn’t matter that his vocal talents shine through on this track—that’s not the purpose of the song. This song is supposed to prepare the audience for yet another action-packed James Bond story.
Instead, it puts you to sleep. It’s far too delicate to be a theme song, if you ask me. However, in Smith’s defense, it is really difficult to follow a James Bond theme song by Adele, let alone performed by Adele.
