Jared Leto will be starring as The Joker in the much-anticipated Suicide Squad film, due out August 2016. And, like stars before him who have played The Joker, like Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger, the role seems to be affecting him on a very deep level… and possibly his castmates as well.
Obviously, the Clown Prince of Crime is a serious role to play. So serious and disturbing of a character, in fact, that there was a lot of speculation regarding whether or not Ledger’s fatal drug overdose was a result of his dedication to the role. (Ledger won an Oscar in 2008 for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.)
And Leto seems to be quite dedicated himself. Apparently, not only did the actor never break character during production, but he has also sent his co-stars some pretty creepy gifts.
In addition to sending Will Smith (Deadshot) bullets, he sent Margot Robbie, who will be playing The Joker’s twisted love-match, Harley Quinn, a love letter and a rat while he was in character.
As for the rest of the cast? They were lucky enough to receive a dead hog carcass in the mail from their lovely co-star.
It’s no wonder they have therapy at their disposal. Adam Beach (Slipknot) said in an interview that the direction, David Ayer, “wants you to torment yourself. He wants the real thing… He wants to make sure we finish a movie and don’t disappear somewhere and then don’t show up for work.” Which is why he hired a therapist for the cast.
These twisted acts are, aside from disturbing, also kind of exciting, because it shows exactly how committed Leto is to this role and guarantees the film will be amazing. Though, with a star-studded cast, that was never really in question. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, what better time to watch it than October as you gear up for Halloween? The movie also stars Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Ike Barinholtz, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood and Common.
