UCLA Alpha Phi & Sig Ep Under Fire For Their "Kanye Western" Mixer

Greek life is under fire again.
Alpha Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon of UCLA got together to throw a party, but the theme and controversial costumes for the “Kanye Western” mixer were considered racist by some.
Partygoers dressed up in baggy clothes to emulate Kanye while others stuffed their backsides to resemble Kim Kardashian. Several students also covered their faces in charcoal as part of a “gold digger” outfit. Members of the school’s Afrikan Student Union stood outside of the party and asked to have the event stopped.
Kelsee Thomas, a junior fine arts major and member of the Afrikan Student Union, explained, “It’s extremely disrespectful for any organization at all to think that this is possibly a good idea. I understand the play on words, but there are so many other ways (to dress) to fit that.”
An early statement from UCLA’s media relations department didn’t seem to think this was a big deal, “[reminding] students that while they are free to celebrate in ways that draw on popular culture, their specific choices can cause harm and pain to others.” The statement continued to note that “the alleged behavior is inconsistent with good judgment as well as our principles of community,” and that an investigation is underway.
Sigma Phi Epsilon activities have been temporarily suspended and a rep said that the fraternity has “zero tolerance” for racism. A rep for Alpha Phi agreed, adding that “building diverse and inclusive communities is core to our identity as an organization.”
Take a look at the photos below and decide for yourself if these costumes are controversial.
