Should You Choose a Signature Scent? The Pros & Cons Of Sticking With One Perfume

Close your eyes and think about your childhood. What memory comes to mind? Was it a time when you were sitting in your grandmother’s kitchen, baking apple pies? Or perhaps it was your mother tucking you in at night?
Whatever the memory, it is definitely associated with a scent that, when smelled today, can take you right back to a certain time and place.
Open your eyes now. You are living in the moment. We are discussing the pros and cons of signature scents…
Your signature scent is the scent that defines you. It not only makes you feel (and smell) your best but it is a reflection of who you are as an individual. It is the scent that people remember you by, much like the smells that evoke memories of specific times in your life.
When we think about signature scents, here are the classics that come to mind:
•  Diorissimo by Christian Dior
• Joy by Jean Patou
• Shalimar by Guerlain
Translated into modern day, those signature scents are:
• Pleasures by Estee Lauder
• Opium by Yves Saint Laurent
• Angel by Thierry Mugler
No matter what the perfume, when thinking about your own signature scent, let’s weigh the pros and cons.

Here are the pros of choosing a signature scent:

1. It is the scent you are remembered by

2.  It becomes people’s first impression of you

3.  It is a daily reminder of how you feel about yourself

4.  It’s a fragrance that makes you happy

5.  It may be the only accessory you wear on a given day

6.  “Long after one has forgotten what a woman wore, the memory of her perfume lingers” – Christian Dior

But just like your taste in foods and clothing changes as you age, your fragrance will most likely change as well.
When you first start wearing perfume, you tend to wear soft, light fragrances. As you get older, you will most likely gravitate towards celebrity and iconic fragrances. Once you have matured and your confidence level has evolved, you will choose a fragrance that reflects your individuality.
Likewise, as you age, your body chemistry also changes. Medications, pregnancy, diet, and environment can all change your olfactory receptors!

And with that said, here are the cons:

1. Most people like to change their fragrance to reflect their mood, clothing, and style

2. You can become bored with a perfume

3. Your likes and dislikes change from moment to moment

4. There are so many scents on the market to choose from

5. One fragrance can be limiting, as can one pair of your favorite shoes.

How many shades of lipstick, eye shadow, and nail polish do you own? I’m sure not just one!
With so many choices in today’s market, women will most likely have a “wardrobe” of fragrances to choose from—scents for the different seasons, times of the day, work or play. Warm, spicy, woody fragrances in winter, fruity, floral refreshing fragrance in summer, sexy and seductive for the evening, professional and subdued for your work day…the list is endless. And in the end, only you can decide what works best for you – just keep it true!
