When Victoria’s Secret Angels are mentioned, big, tousled, bouncy, near bedhead hair comes to mind. You aren’t wrong to think of this image immediately as most of the runway models who walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show had their hair styled exactly that way. However, Angola-born model, Maria Borges, broke through this traditional beauty mold and took to the runway wearing her hair in its natural form: short and curly.
In an interview with Essence, Borges explains how the decision came to be. She said, “I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair. I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy.”
It’s a powerful gesture by Borges to embrace her natural beauty on such a large stage. She is showing the world that beautiful hair does not have to be long and flirty – it can be natural, too.
While Borges is not the first model to walk the runway with natural hair (Ajuma Nasenyana walked the show with a fully shaved head back in 2006), we still have to give her massive props.
