Tequila Can Help You Lose Weight

It’s no secret that drinking adds on loads of extra, empty calories (and that’s not including the additional calories from that post-bar pizza slice). Lucky for tequila drinkers, a new study was published that discovered a link between tequila consumption and weight loss. Beer aficionados have now become tequila-fanatics. According to the American Chemical Society, sugars found in the agave plant, the plant that makes tequila, can help lower your blood sugar. The sugars that occur naturally in the agave plant are called “agavins” and are non-digestible by the body, so they won’t raise your blood sugar. Suddenly, your local liquor store has run out of tequila. Researchers used mice to discover this fascinating new link between tequila and weight loss. The mice were fed a standard diet and then given water with agavins added. The mice ended up eating less overall and even had lower blood sugar levels in comparison to other groups who did not consume water with agavins. Additionally, the study suggested that agavins could be beneficial for people with type-2 diabetes or struggling with weight loss issues due to a hormone produced called GLP-1. GLP-1 is a hormone that keeps the stomach full longer and produces insulin. Science is amazing, isn’t it?
