NBC Network head Robert Grennblatt announced at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday Hairspray will be the network’s next live musical, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“I’m happy to say that we are hopefully going to be produce a live new movie of Hairspray next December,” Grennblatt said. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. who also produced last month’s live musical version of The Wiz, will return for the project. NBC’s previous live musicals include The Sound of Music in 2013 (starring Carrie Underwood), Peter Pan in 2014 (starring Allison Williams), and The Wiz in 2015 (starring Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Amber Riley, and more).
Based on the 1988 John Waters film, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, who wins a spot on a television dance show in 1962 Baltimore. After becoming an overnight sensation, Tracy then launches a campaign to integrate the show.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 2002 and won eight 2003 Tony Awards including Best Musical. A movie version of the musical was released in 2007 starring Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow, and John Travolta as Tracy’s mother, Edna Turnblad.
More details about the television adaptation will be available in the coming months.
