You’re about to change the way you think about “Barbie.”
Think cute bikinis are reserved for ladies who look ready to walk the Victoria’s Secret runway? Think again. American Eagle brand Aerie is proving that beauty comes in all shapes in sizes in their latest campaign for their initiative Aerie Real.
The brand first launched the #AerieReal idea two years ago, promising not to Photoshop its models. That’s totally great, but they’ve still stuck to models who are rather thin to model their clothes.
Meet Barbara Ferreira. The 18 year old — who goes by Barbie — is the new face of Aerie Real and actually is refreshingly real. Her 30″ waist and 44″ hips don’t stop her from rocking a pink string bikini (and looking flawless while doing so).
“Not being retouched… is very important to me,” size 12 Ferreira says in the video. “People knowing that that’s what I look like, without anybody’s perception of what my body needs to look like [is important].”
Seriously. Photoshopping those curves would be a crime.

“We cast Barbie because she’s got nothing to hide,” Aerie’s Jen Foyle told Refinery29 of the collaboration. “She’s strong and beautiful, [and] she embraces her real self.”
The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with people saying they feel more confident and empowered when they see someone who looks like them in ads.
