Supreme Court Gives Abortion Providers A Huge Victory

On Friday, the Supreme Court blocked the enforcement of a Louisiana law that could have shut down all but one of Louisiana’s abortion clinics and leave only one doctor licensed to perform abortions in the state.

This Supreme Court ruling provides immense hope for pro-choice Americans as it indicates that the Supreme Court is now “unwilling to let conservative states to enforce stringent regulations,” according to The Los Angeles Times.

According to the Associated Press, the law requires abortion-providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The Los Angeles Times highlights that most hospitals refuse to give privileges to doctors who perform abortions.

The Supreme Court, by a vote of 7-1, blocked the Louisiana law from taking effect. Only Justice Clarence Thomas dissented.

Two clinics in Boisier City and Baton Rouge that had closed in response to the appellate ruling will reopen as a result of this new ruling. A third clinic in Shreveport that was facing imminent closure will remain open, according to the Center of Reproductive Rights, which is representing the clinics.

This week, the Supreme Court also heard arguments from a case in Texas. Lawmakers are requiring admitting privileges for abortion-providers and hospital-like standards for the clinics. Supporters of the law say it is a way to ensure the safety of women who are seeking abortions whereas opponents insist that it is a tactic to curb the practice all together.

The Los Angeles Times points out that the medical benefits of this requirement were minimal and that clinics and hospitals “already had transfer agreements for emergency cases.” If the Texas law is fully-enforced, there will only be 10 clinics operating in the state.

This Supreme Court order came two days after the justices heard arguments from the abortion case from Texas and just hours after they voted in a private meeting on the outcome of that case. According to the Associated Press, the outcome of the Texas case likely will not be made public until this summer.
