Gisele Bündchen Was Told She’d Never Be On A Magazine Cover When She Started Modeling

You know Gisele Bundchen from runways all over the world and the cover of top magazines like W, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Allure, VogueGQ, and more. That’s why it’s so hard to imagine that when she was beginning her modeling career, Gisele was told she’d never be a cover girl.

“I remember some people telling me my nose was too big or my eyes were too small, that I could never be on a magazine cover,” Gisele told PEOPLE about the start of her career in Brazil. “It wasn’t easy to be 14 and hear that kind of criticism. It made me feel insecure.”

Instead of giving up, Gisele turned to her parent for advice.

“I told my dad, and he said, ‘Next time, tell them, I have a big nose and that comes with a big personality,'” she remembers. “At that point I felt, if I kept working hard and giving my best, it would all work out.”

And you know how that story turned out, right?

Gisele booked a flight to New York at age 16 but work was still extremely hard to come by. She was rejected 42 times before landing a runway show for Alexander McQueen, which led to a Vogue cover. The rest is supermodel history.

It’s been two decades in the spotlight, but there’s still more to come.

“I am not retiring,” Gisele said. “I love learning and I love creating and I feel that will always be a part of my life. I am just emptying my glass, so I can fill it with things that are more aligned with who I am today.”

Goddess.
