The year 2016 has already been filled with the release of many outstanding films which encompass a variety of genres. Dramatic films such as The Revenant, Room, and Carol and action films such as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deadpool are only some examples to date. The lineup does not seem to be stopping anytime soon. With summer just around the corner, here is a list of movies to look forward to from now until the end of August.
1. Captain America: Civil WarGetty Images
In honor of its release Friday, May 6, we believe Captain America: Civil War is one of the first big films to kick off the season. The film is next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lineup and is the sequel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The release has superhero fans (and Chris Evan fans) everywhere on the edge of their seats in anticipation. The film reportedly has a budget of $220 million and received a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. If for any reason, at least go to see this film to stare at Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. for 2 hours and 26 minutes.
2. X-Men: ApocolypseGetty Images
Only a few weeks later, X-Men Apocolypse will be released on May 27. The film is the next in Marvel’s X-Men Universe films after X-Men: Days of Future Past. With director Bryan Singer and a cast including Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, and Oscar Isaac as “Apocolypse,” this action adventure is expected to be nothing short of its preceding films. And we can’t forget to mention our favorite: Jennifer Lawrence returning as “Mystique.”
3. Finding DoryGetty Images
This summer is not only about superhero and action films – animated films will have a large presence as well. The long anticipated film Finding Dory will be released in theaters on June 17. Fans of the film’s prequel, Finding Nemo, have been waiting for the sequel about their favorite fish since 2003. Audiences everywhere were ecstatic when Ellen DeGeneres announced the film on her talk show back in 2013 after years of consistent jokes about Finding Nemo being the only animated film without a sequel. We have a feeling that people of all ages will be lining up at the theaters to see this one.
4. The ShallowsGetty Images
It may not get better than watching Blake Lively fight for her life from a terrifying great white shark only 200 yards offshore. The film will be released in theaters June 24, and both trailers have already sent chills down audience’s spines. As if swimming in the ocean was not already terrifying enough for some people, this modern day Jaws is sure to have viewers avoiding the water…at least for a little while.
5. The Legend of Tarzan
July will be another month full of exciting and unique films. On July 1, The Legend of Tarzan will be released in theaters. The film follows “Tarzan,” who has been living a normal life as John Clayton with his beloved wife Jane, on his journey back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary. The trailer has audiences buzzing about the film (and Alexander’s Skarsgard’s washboard abs). He is not the only cast member to be excited for, however. Margot Robbie and Samuel L. Jackson are another two reasons to see the film, as well as its cinematography.
6. The Purge: Election Year
Many people will be celebrating the Fourth of July holiday with fireworks and BBQs, while others will be attending the opening day of The Purge: Election Day in theaters. The annual purge is back again and when a Senator tries to put a stop to the holiday, she seems to become the main target. Both prequels, The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy, terrified audiences across the country with endless suspense and blood and gore. Looking at the trailer, the third film seems to be no different.
7. Suicide SquadGetty Images
Perhaps the highly most anticipated movie of the summer is Suicide Squad. The film is the next in the DC’s lineup after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice which was released in March. The film is being released on August 5 and will feature some of the greatest supervillains in DC history such as Harley Quinn, The Joker, and DeadShot. If the characters in the film were not enough, the cast is what really has people talking. With stars like Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith, the film is expected to do more than impress critics and fans.
8. The FounderGetty Images
On the same day of the release of Suicide Squad, an American biographical film about the founder of McDonald’s opens in theaters. From director John Lee Hancock, The Founder tells the story of Ray Kroc and his journey of acquiring the fast food restaurant. If the plot does not catch your attention, the cast sure will. It includes actors like Michael Keaton, Nick Offerman, and Laura Dern. We believe the trailer only depicts the start of the drama and inspiring true story and look forward to seeing the film in its entirety.
These are only eight of the many films being released in the upcoming summer months. Others include Woody Allen’s film Cafe Society, John Krasinski’s The Hollars, and of course the female version of Ghostbusters. Even though summer is a time for spending days outside and participating in outdoor activities, we will definitely making our way to the theaters a number of times and recommend that everyone does the same.
