This is straight-up appalling.
It seems like every day that there are new reports about the crazy pressure that is being placed on young girls about their bodies. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just let the little girls, you know, be little girls and let them do as they please?
Of course not. That would be too easy.
The Ripley Academy in Derbyshire in England was forced to cancel “bikini body” fitness classes after concerned parents objected. Frankly, I’m shocked that the “bikini body fitness class” idea even came to fruition in the first place.
One mother, Sarah Reeves, told the Derbyshire Times, “I’m all for kids enjoying and getting into fitness, but enough of the sexualization. Yes, it’s important to promote health and fitness, but it needs to be done in the right way. Putting extra pressure on our girls is not setting the right example.”
Preach, Mama Reeves.
The school claims that the classes were started without their knowledge by a supply teacher who is covering a staff member’s maternity leave. Most importantly, however, is that the school declared that they’re putting a stop to it.
In a statement, the school said, “As soon as we were made aware of these after-school classes, they were cancelled as they did not reflect the values of the academy.”
The school continued and said, “At The Ripley Academy, we do run a variety of extra-curricular activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst all of our students and we would never condone any class, or after-school activity, that may put pressure on any young person in terms of their own body image”
