#GiveElsaAGirlfriend: A Campaign To Give Elsa A Female Love Interest

One of Disney’s most recent hit films, Frozen, is said to be getting a sequel in the not too distant future. Audiences and fans of the movie raved about how the main character Elsa, was the first princess who did not have a love interest and whose plot did not revolve around needing a man to be happy. But now as the sequel is becoming a conversation many people believe that it is time for Elsa to have a love interest. Only this time, they do not want a prince. Instead, they are asking Disney to give Elsa a female love interest rather than a male.

Some fans have taken to twitter and began a campaign to make this happen. And very quickly #GiveElsaAGirlfrind began trending on twitter. The campaign has gone so far that it has even reached the actual stars of the film who have commented about the ideal. Idina Menzel, who voices else in the film, stated that she was not opposed to Elsa falling in love with a woman in the sequel to the film. However, Menzel continued by saying that it was ultimately up to Disney to make that kind of decision.  The singer and Broadway star addressed the campaign while attending the Billboard Music Awards this past Sunday, May 22nd.

” I think it’s great,” said Menzel. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.” She then added that no matter what the decision is, the character has changed her life.

The sequel was announced back in March of 2015 when Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios John Lasseter made a statement.  “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”

“Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle,” said Lasseter. “We are so excited about that.”

This idea for a female love interest first arose back on April 30th when a girl named Alexis Isabel Moncada tweeted on April 30th that she hoped Disney would make Elsa that first lesbian princess. She tweeted “Dear @Disney #GiveElsaAGirlfrind.” Many Frozen fans caught word and jumped on the bandwagon and the campaign began trending earlier this month.

However, not everyone is on board with this idea. Many fans believe that the character should remain without a love interest to act as an independent role model for young fans and girls. Others believe that there should be a male love interest for Elsa rather than a female. While other fans believe that giving Elsa a female love interest will not change societal attitudes and will only act as a way to push an agenda through an already established character.

It is said that Disney has finished the script and said to begin recording shortly. Frozen 2 is expected to be released in theaters in 2018.
